Resilient House, New Orleans
“Man never made any material as resilient as the human spirit.” - Bern William.
The name of our project, Resilient House, is inspired by the people of New Orleans. Resilience is the system’s capacity to meet obstacles, to adapt, and move forward mobilizing human innovation, spirit and determination. Given the challenges the humanity faces, we see the idea of the Resilient House as an integrated part of a bigger, overall solution, which includes among others, building strong communities. We have designed the Resilient House according to the Passive House Standard and included the following key elements to the house: well insulated building components – walls, floor, and roof, high quality windows, air-tight building envelope, thermal bridge free construction, and highly efficient energy recovery ventilation (ERV). Due to the extremely hot and humid climate in New Orleans the house has supply air and recirculation cooling and dehumidification.
As a result of these components, we have achieved: Space Heat Demand – 2 kWh/(m2a); Airtight building shell ≤ 0.2 ACH @ 50 pascal pressure; Primary Energy Demand 94 kWh/(m2a), and Cooling Energy Demand 7 kWh/(m2a)
Important feature of the Resilient House is its connection with the Nature. The structure of the green wall and roof brings the outdoors indoor and also provides natural shading to the house.
