We are pleased to announce that the “Jack Up the Box” project by RPGS has won the latestDesignByMany challenge: “A Pop-Up Retail Store” The challenge asked professionals and students in the architectural, engineering and construction (AEC) community to submit a proposal to design a quickly constructed or prefabricated, free-standing shop of no more than 200 square feet.

Description

For new Fall fashions and back-to-school shopping, ‘pop-up’ retail shops are the hottest trend.  These small, temporary shops are bringing fashion and an urban edge to under-utilized and vacant spaces. This challenge is to design a quickly constructed or prefabricated, free-standing shop of no more than 200 square feet.  

Context

• Flat-ground, appropriate for a vacant lot, parking lot, or park setting.  
• Location and design should be appropriate for selling goods. We are looking for a workable concept so permitting/legal vending issues need not be considered, drawing in foot traffic and visibility should be.
• Location should be selected by the designer. Please specify a location, or locations, as the basis for your analysis

Objectives

• Provide no more than 200 square feet of product display and sales space.
• Store should be easy to set up and tear down for one season or product line.  
• Store may connect to a certain product type or theme. (i.e. shoes, shirts sunglasses, etc..?) or theme (i.e. football fan gear near a pitch).
• Design should lock up at night.
• Design should be adaptable to various environmental conditions.

Prizes

Judges

• Carmen Trudell - Carmen holds a B.Arch from the Architecture Department at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and an M.S. in Advanced Architectural Design from the School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation, Columbia University, NY. She is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Philosophy at the Center for Architecture, Science and Ecology, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY. She has held a number of academic positions at her alma mater, Columbia University, and most recently taught at the New York City College of Technology, Brooklyn, NY. Carmen comes as well with a wealth of professional experience that spans over fifteen years.

  Carmen has conducted extensive research and has received numerous awards and grants. Her current teaching and professional work has been guided by three threads - research, technology, and sustainability. Registered both in California and New York, she is also a LEED Accredited Professional. Carmen will lend her talent at the undergraduate level in the first year design and in the Environmental Control Systems sequence.

• Daniel Kidd - Daniel J. Kidd joined BIG in 2010 and is currently a Designer. He has worked to develop ways to better communicate architectural ideas through animation while a project leader for Brooklyn Digital Foundry. Daniel held the position as teaching assistant while studying at Columbia University, applying a specific focus to Rhino, 3D Studio Max, Maya & Adobe AfterEffects, and he also co-taught studios at the graduate and undergraduate level at Columbia from 2007 - 2009. Daniel brings additional focus on software and digital design to BIG.
   
• Giancarlo Valle - Giancarlo Valle grew up in San Francisco, Chicago, Caracas, and Guatemala City. He received his Masters of Architecture at Princeton University where he was awarded the Suzanne Kolarik Underwood Thesis Prize. Previously, Giancarlo worked in Philadelphia for KieranTimberlake Associates. Since then he has worked at SHoP Architects, WW, and Stan Allen Architect in New York. Giancarlo has most recently completed a number of collaborations with designers Jason Wu, Thakoon, and Phillip Lim, in addition to participating in various competitions, lecture series, and guest juries while at Princeton.
