Description:

The challenge is to design a protective canopy for an urban pedestrian street. The goal is to provide an architectural solution that is functional, feasible and elegant. The canopy must protect people from the elements (rain, sun), while promoting good ventilation and daylight levels. Artificial lighting should be integrated into the design. The designer is free to choose a location, but the documentation should clearly explain the chosen location and how the design responds to climate and orientation. Please see the images in the gallery for design precedents.

Context

  • Abstracted urban pedestrian streets.
  • Location: To be determined by designer. Please specify location and orientation.

Objectives

  • Protect pedestrians from the elements (rain, sun).
  • Promote natural ventilation and daylighting.
  • Artificial lighting should be integrated into design
  • Develop a design strategy that can adapt to various site conditions.
  • Design should functional, feasible and elegant.
  • Have fun!

Submission

  • Post design model and documentation (3d and/or 2d)
  • Post images (optional)
  • Post diagrams explaining approach (optional)
  • Post video explaining approach (optional)

Judges

  • Demetrios A Comodromos - Method Design is an integrated design shop that focuses on the notion of provocation to activate spatial, material and social dynamics as a network of action and reaction. Equally comfortable with apartment restoration and full-scale urban planning, Method Design applies a design approach that simultaneously draws upon and challenges the context of each project in the development of a new experiential condition.
  • David Light is currently employed as the Revit Specialist for HOK London. Focusing on Revit and BIM as well as driving forwards HOK'../content/model-parametric-version-buckminster-fuller%E2%80%99s-dymaxion-house">first DesignByMany Challenge.
  • Zach Downey is the Director of the Applied Technology Group at SHoP architects in New York City.
  • DesignByMany Community - The top 10 entries based on user votes will be seen by the judges.
