This challenge consists of final projects from Advanced Digital II: Intro to Computational Design, a seminar that I taught this Spring at Parsons The New School for Design. The students used Rhino with Grasshopper, Firefly and the Arduino microcontroller to prototype responsive visual and spatial systems.
The course and project description are below:
The increasing accessibility of microcontrollers and sensing hardware and sophistication of modeling and simulation software has made designers more aware of the invisible forces that influence the behavior and performance of the built environment. As designers we not only have the responsibility to understand this data and allow it to inform our work, but we also have the opportunity to respond directly and dynamically to this data as it is gathered in real-time.
This course will introduce parametric modeling and programming to designers through the creation of design systems that are connected to external environmental data. Students will develop systems that visualize and respond to this data. Each student will propose a project based on physical measurements from an existing space on campus. These measurements may include: light, sound, temperature and/or indoor air quality, among others. The final projects will consist of parametric models that dynamically respond to this data.

Breathability Orb is a parametric sculpture built with Grasshopper and Firefly plugins for Rhinoceros. The Orb responds to an air quality sensor by expanding and contracting its pores to notify building occupants as to the quality of...
DesignByMany is a challenge based design technology community. Users post challenges to the community along with their design source files. The community can then post responses with their own source files to solve the challenge. They can also comment on the challenge and interact with other designers throughout the process.
